Orange Peel: New Quilts from an Old Favorite — Review by James A. Cox, Edtor-in-Chief
"Orange Peel: New Quilts From an Old Favorite" provides nearly twenty quilts gathered from the New Quilts From An Old Favorite contest. Over twenty quiltmaker interpretations of the classic block provides a large range of variations and techniques in a fine survey certain to delight any quilting collection looking for something new. Color photos and patterns make it easy to create these originals and variations. --James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, The Bookwatch, Midwest Book Review, July 2011. (Posted on 7/15/11)
Orange Peel: New Quilts from an Old Favorite Contest — Review by Patti Ives, The Applique Society
For the past 18 years The National Quilt Museum has gathered creative quilting minds to express themselves through their “New Quilts from an Old Favorite” contest. This years challenge was that old favorite block “Orange Peel”. This book takes the reader on a journey of discovery as the 23 quiltmakers that participated in this year’s competition share their interpretation of the classic block. You will learn
how each quiltmaker came about creating their own design as well as some of the tricks and tips they used in their beautiful quilts. Sometimes we need a break from our quilting to step back and take time to read how others create. This book lets the reader do exactly that. You will recognize some of the names in the book and you will also enjoy reading about how some used appliqué in their designs. The photos of the 18 finished quilts will inspire you. The interviews with the quiltmakers will help you understand their thought processes behind the designs. You may even find a technique or tip you would like to try on your next project. If you would like to participate in next year’s contest please visit the museum’s website www.quiltmuseum.org for
details. Future blocks include Baskets (2012), Jacob’s Ladder (2013) and Carolina Lilly (2014). (Posted on 7/14/11)
New Quilts from an Old Favorite: Orange Peel — Review by Vivian Benton
I really look forward to this book every year. It is amazing how creative the people are who enter the contest. I love seeing how they take traditional block patterns to a new level. It is even more amazing to read about their thought process and how what they start out with ends up being something totally different. You'll love this book (and all the books in the series).
