Everything you want to know about the Carolina Lily Block! — Review by Patty
Overall Rating
I so look forward to the "New Quilts From an Old Favorite" book every year! This book starts out by giving us some information on the contest behind this book and then some history on the Carolina Lily block. Then it delves into information on the designers of the 18 finalists of the contests, what inspired them to create their design, and then some information on the techniques they used in making their quilt, along with photos of the design and construction process, as well as beautiful photos of the completd quilt. This is a great book to give as a gift or to use as inspiration to enter a future National Quilt Museum contest! (Posted on 3/12/15)
Sure to inspire garden quilters regardless of their skill level. — Review by Connie Krochmal

Edited by Linda Baxter Lasco, this inspirational title will be of special interest to garden quilters. It features 18 unique, innovative variations on a classic quilt block. There are lush, full color photos of each quilt.

Each year, the National Quilt Museum chooses a specific classic quilt block for its "New Quilts from an Old Favorite" contest. This book is the result of one such contest. It is sure to inspire garden quilters regardless of their skill levels.

It features the winners (first through fifth place) as well as the 13 finalists. In some cases, a quilt was made by quilting group or by a duo - with one created by a mother and daughter.

Each winner or finalist explains how she created the quilt, the techniques she used, and the inspiration for her design.

Many of these quilt designs are quite breathtaking. I find it hard to choose a favorite. One depicting water lilies is quite lovely.Lilies in the sunset features a border of realistic looking daylilies in various colors surrounding a central traditional Carolina Lily block.

The book also features a detailed history of the Carolina Lily Block and two versions of the originial block. (Posted on 10/20/14)

I look forward to this book each year, because I find it fascinating to learn how a variety of quiltmakers interpret a traditional pattern in new and unique ways. And I enjoy reading the stories behind each maker's process. (Posted on 6/5/14)
