Quilt Mavens-Perfect Paper Piecing — Review by Sylvia Thomas
AQS recently heard from Diann in Silverdale, WA, that she was having difficulty opening the pattern CD for “Quilt Mavens: Perfect Paper Piecing” by Deb Karasik and Janet Mednick. The pattern CD is designed to open with Adobe© Acrobat© Reader and will not require a password. If when opening the CD you are asked for a password, your computer is trying to use the wrong program. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader, you can download it free from the Internet. --Sylvia Thomas, AQS Administrative Assistant (Posted on 3/22/10)

Achieve breathtaking results with these complex-looking patterns that go together quickly and accurately. The authors give basic instructions on color choices and foundation piecing, as well as a detailed explanation of the 14 patterns included on the CD-ROM. Deb and Janet’s conversational tips and strategies are sprinkled throughout. Three small projects quickly progress to more advanced quilts. Prior experience with curved piecing and set-in seams would be a plus. From wickedly easy to extremely spiky, make stunning quilts you never before thought possible. Paper piecing for quilters just got easier with “QuiltMavens: Perfect Paper Piecing,” a guide to producing polished, professional results using the QuiltMavens method along with a pattern CD-ROM included. Color photos and patterns accompany color sidebars of details and information to make paper piecing a snap. The results look intricate and complex but are actually easy to reproduce, making this a top pick for aspiring quilters who want to learn paper-piecing tricks. This book and accompanying CD-Rom need to have a Black Box warning that says:

"WARNING! Spikes are addictive. View and use at your own risk!"

Deb Karasik and Janet Mednick have collaborated to create a collection of gorgeous quilts containing curves, and spikes, and all manner of things! Best of all, these quilts (now known as Spikey Quilts) are something that can be done by quilters everywhere, because they are paper pieced.

The instructions in the book are clear, the illustrative pictures are great, the patterns are on the CD-Rom for ease of use, and the pictures of the quilts will take your breath away.......... and then inspire you to create Spikey Quilts of your own!
