This time the answer to the question “What’s black and white and red all over?” is a fun new book with 12 contemporary and traditional designs. Some of the dramatic patterns are easy enough for beginners to piece, but some of the paper-foundation projects will require patience. Quilts of many colors can be fun, but for a real lesson in working with value, give this book a try. Lois Verma, Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, November 2006, page 23 (Posted on 5/23/07)

Often neglected, a black and white color palette can stretch your imagination and help you to see texture and design in a new way. This would be great fun as a guild or personal challenge. Starting with a brief introduction to value and scale, you’ll quickly progress to the collection of a dozen contemporary designs, including some traditional blocks. With strong visual contrast and whimsy, these quilt designs can easily be adapted to colorful versions, giving you even more possibilities. These dramatic designs show that quilts need not be colorful in order to be eye-catching. In fact, the author’s designs have a quirky and amusing aspect. In this title, the author presents a dozen designs from the more traditional to contemporary ones. The introduction has all the basics. This has templates and fully illustrated, step-by-step directions for all the techniques and projects along with a delightful story behind each design. Black & White Quilts by Design focuses on black and white fabrics which are surprisingly vivid productions. Some are pieced, some use strips, all provide dynamic interplays of pattern and fabric to make for intriguing results. A top pick.
