This popular National Quilt Museum annual contest has taken flight once again! Annually, the museum sponsors a contest based on a traditional quilt pattern. The challenge to quiltmakers stems from the contest name—New Quilts From An Old Favorite. This year’s theme is the Flying Geese block. An exhibit of contest winners and finalists is held each year at the museum. This book is a collection of the most innovative quilts entered in the contest. Inside you will meet the quilters, discover their inspiration, and follow their techniques. You will see the color, the creativity, and the craft of a widely diverse group. Our hope is that the quilts will provide motivation for all quilters to consider their own interpretation of a traditional block to create a new quilt from an old favorite. OUT OF PRINT Learn More

When Marsha D. Radtke discovered a tattered quilt in her rural Maryland parsonage attic, she found local history as well as an old textile. The red and green Baltimore Album quilt not only had an inked date of 1850, it also had inked signatures of women with well-known area family names. It was the superb workmanship that inspired Marsha to re-create the quilt s 24 hand appliqué patterns (one of them repeated in different fabrics) and share this historic treasure with others. These patterns sewn with expert skill before the Civil War have been redrafted for today's quilter with precision, clarity, and easy-to-follow instructions. In addition to being a Baltimore Album pattern teaching guide and resource, the book includes Martha's quilt-as-you-go technique and fail-safe binding method. OUT OF PRINT Learn More

Who ever thought your camera and computer could be your most valuable quilting tools? Going far beyond the concept of simply transferring photos to fabric, the authors show you how to transform your favorite photos into dazzling quilts. Learn how to 'piece' traditional blocks and original 'appliqué' designs using Adobe® Photoshop® Elements software to create, modify, embellish, and print the designs directly onto fabric. The intriguing digital projects include easy-to-follow step-by-step instructions. It is fun and efficient to copy, resize, and reprint your blocks to create larger or smaller quilts, table runners, pillows, or note cards. You'll love using common images in uncommon ways, creating fabrics for your own wonderfully unique quilts. Collectively, this talented California team has been quilting for nearly 50 years. Both are enthusiastic teachers. Gudny is a PC expert who also teaches painting on fabric. Sandra is a Macintosh expert who has been teaching how to print images onto fabric and incorporate them into quilts. Together they teach workshops on their digital-quilting technique. This exhibit catalogue chronicles the first-ever display in the United States of appliqué pieces made by several Tentmakers from Cairo, Egypt. The 95 works range in size from about 20 inches x 30 inches to 100 inches x 100 inches. Originally made to serve as interior decoration for the tents of sheiks and other tribal leaders, these beautiful appliqués are now used to decorate tents and modern buildings and rooms for special occasions such as weddings and funerals. Although constructed of three layers, they are not quilted per se; in the best work, no stitching shows through on the canvas backing.

What quilter doesn't need a scrap-o-lator to deal with all her scraps? Dianne made four fabulous scrappy quilts but had barely made a dent in her scrap pile, so she decorated her table with a runner and reversible placemats. More scraps remained. She sewed a lamp shade. More scraps. She stopped sewing and started gluing. A rug, a mirror, a folding chair, another lamp, a mailbox, and one piggy bank later, she gave up trying to scrape the bottom of her scrap baskets and wrote this book. Now anyone can make these 13 scrap-o-lator projects. Out of Print Learn More

Step away from the usual look of continuous line quilting designs into the natural world of a Danish artist with these extraordinary patterns. Drawing from such venues as the barn yard, a pond, the ocean, a forest, and a field of flowers, Lone brings flora and fauna to unusual life. Her birds and beasts can populate individual blocks or stretch along borders. They can be enlarged or reduced to create pantographs or the most intricate fill patterns. Each design was created for continuous machine quilting, but hand quilters will find these shapes beautifully adaptable. OUT OF PRINT Learn More
