Quilting Beauties

Quilting Beauties

A fresh look and creative take on the versatile New York Beauty block. Bold, high-contrast colors and unusual outer shapes take the already elevated drama of the New York Beauty to an even higher level. The patterns and techniques use foundation piecing to produce perfect points on the spiked arcs and apply traditional piecing methods for sewing the curved seams. The designs look complex but are in fact quite the opposite--often pairing a New York Beauty block with a simple Log Cabin or a Double Four-Patch for amazing results. It's the perfect book for the confident beginner-level quilter.

Very Unique NY Beauties! — Review by Patty
Overall Rating
Nine unique New York Beauty patterns in a variety of shapes and sizes. The New York Beauty blocks are combined with other simple blocks, such as Bow tie, Flying Geese, and a Double Four -Patch. The designs look complex, but aren't. They are designed for confident beginners. (Posted on 3/27/16)
Foundation Paper-Piecing — Review by Linda
Overall Rating
You know times are changing when a new book includes a CD-ROM of printable full-sized templates and foundations for making your sewing easier! Besides giving instructions for making nine quilts, several pages are devoted to explaining how to hang unusual-shaped quilts. Great photos help with that understanding. "Quilting Beauties" is a book for the confident beginner who wants to focus on foundation paper-piecing, and perhaps discover for the first time how quilters get those precise spiky points! Nine unique quilt projects — Review by Patricia Mesker
Overall Rating
Karen Neary shares her love of New York Beauty blocks in this collection of nine unique quilt projects that use a combination of foundation piecing and traditional piecing methods. The book provides comprehensive directions that describe and illustrate everything from how to use the templates provided in the accompanying CD to hanging the finished quilts. The quilt designs feature unusual silhouettes giving them a sophisticated look, but they are targeted for “confident beginning-level quilters,” which is great motivation to get started on my favorite pattern, Calliope. Intriguing treatment of traditional New York Beauty block — Review by Kathie
Overall Rating
Designer Karen Neary has manipulated the New York Beauty block in a variety of ways by stretching the points, repeating sections, and creating unique, irregular edges. Projects include both wall hangings and table toppers and runners. My favorite designs are Farrago and Batik Beauty for their lively movement. (Posted on 4/14/15)
