nice finished product, not for beginners — Review by Elizabeth
Overall Rating
My daughter is getting married and wants me to make totes for her bridesmaids. We both liked the large size of this tote, so I purchased the kit to see how difficult/easy it would be to make for the girls. I am a very good, high intermediate level quilter but do not have garment construction experience. I used a Singer One sewing machine in constructing this tote and it may be that a sturdier machine would handle the canvas fabric better. This kit comes with generous cuts of the fabric you will need for its construction but you will need to provide the interfacing. The instructions are clear but could be improved with additional visuals/graphics. A denim needle is recommended (definitely a necessity), but in addition, it is my opinion this tote, with the fabric provided, cannot be constructed without a walking foot. The linen canvas is very thick as is the recommended interfacing. Most of the seams are 2 to 4 layers of fabric, but you will be going through as many as 7 layers of fabric. Without garment construction experience, I found the instructions for both the box corners and zipper insertion (optional) to be skimpy and had to search the techniques separately. The finished tote is roomy, sturdy, and has generous pockets. My daughter and I both love the finished product, but I will be using quilting weight cottons instead of the heavy linen canvas in the hopes that the edge stitching and support stitching will be easier to keep even.
