A Baltimore Album style quilt without all the work. — Review by Patti
Overall Rating
As a quilter I am sure you have seen and admired all the work it takes to create a Baltimore Style
appliqué quilt. They are so beautiful, yet so time consuming. Linda Thielfoldt, author of the book “On My Way to Baltimore”, had those same feelings. As a modern quilter, with limited time, Linda designed the quilts in this book to give you a taste of Baltimore without spending a lot of time. Her techniques work beautifully to help you gain the look of a Baltimore Album style quilt without all the work.

Linda uses machine appliqué to speed the stitching process. Her method is to use the machine buttonhole stitch (found on most sewing machines) with fusible web. Although if you prefer to use a more traditional hand appliqué technique you will find your favorite appliqué stitching method works well with any of these patterns.

Most of the blocks in this book are based on an 18” block size. This will allow you to complete the quilt in less time and also give you the flexibility to mix and match the appliqué designs within most of the quilts in the book. The quilts in the book also contain pieced elements that are quicker to complete than the traditional appliqué quilts you see.

In the first section of the book you will find all the information you need to get started from tools and supplies to general quiltmaking instructions. This includes Linda’s instructions for her machine stitched and fused buttonhole appliqué method. Start with one of the smaller projects and work your way up to the beautiful 80” x 80” larger quilt. There are a total of 19 different block designs and all but two of them are presented in two different colorways. This will help you decide which fabrics and colors you may want to use. The beautiful photographs and color illustration will go a long way in helping you complete your project.

For a fun new modern twist you may want to check out the last project in the book called “Carnivale” it combines fun string pieced blocks with an appliqué center. Most of the patterns in this book will need to be enlarged 400% with the exception of the center block in the “Carnivale” project which enlarges 200%. Confident beginners and experienced appliquérs will all find something in this book to enjoy creating. (Posted on 6/8/16)
